Context
Truvalue Labs was the first company to apply AI and natural-language processing to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risk metrics, evaluating corporate behavior and performance from news and other unstructured sources.
Its customers were institutional investors accustomed to dense, data-heavy research tools, and many did not yet trust or understand ESG data. The platform needed to present ESG as seriously as traditional financial metrics. A CedarVane co-founder, an early employee at Truvalue Labs, worked across the platform, design systems, and brand, and contributed as a developer on special projects.
Work
Platform redesign for institutional investors
Platform redesign
The platform UI was redesigned to fit the ecosystem of financial research tools customers already used: denser, darker, and data-forward. The update moved the product away from a lightweight SaaS skin and set the stage for richer analytics features.
Covid-19 ESG data set on the developer site
Covid-19 ESG Monitor and developer site
In April 2020 the company released a free Covid-19 dataset and dashboard examining corporate news and activity through an ESG lens. Design and implementation went from idea to launch in ten days, working with data scientists and researchers. The dataset was published through an MVP developer site, designed and built in about a month.
Product design system
Product design system
Developed with a UX designer as part of the UI redesign: the platform’s first design system, covering color, typography, iconography, components, and building blocks.
Brand design system and print collateral
Brand design system
A brand system spanning research reports, printed materials, banners, and apparel.
Outcome
The Covid-19 ESG Monitor was featured in a Financial Times article on big data. Truvalue Labs was acquired by FactSet in November 2020, and the platform work continued inside FactSet Workstation.
This work was done by a CedarVane co-founder before the company was founded.
